In recent weeks thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have come together to hold vigils and show their anger at the rise in homophobic violence.

The brutal murder of Ian Baynham in Trafalgar Square and the assault on James Parkes in Liverpool sent shockwaves through the LGBT community.

Reported homophobic attacks have risen by 20 percent in London, 32 percent in Glasgow, 40 percent in Liverpool and 63 percent in Greater Manchester over the past year.

And the mood was fuelled by the appearance of Nazi British National Party (BNP) leader Nick Griffin on the BBC’s Question Time, where he described seeing two men kissing as “creepy”.

The priest was lost in the Channel District and needed directions to Interstate 275, so he tapped a U.S. Marines reservist on the arm and, in a thick Greek accent, asked for help.

That’s how police say the incident began.

But Lance Cpl. Jasen Bruce said the man, who was wearing a robe, sandals and a long beard, propositioned him in English and grabbed his genitals.

Both versions of events end the same way – with the priest recovering from a beating with a tire iron, the Marine reservist under arrest and police investigating a possible hate crime.

Three men face attempted murder and hate crime charges in Montgomery County for allegedly attacking a group that included a transvestite who had seen one of the suspects hours earlier in a restaurant, according to police charging documents.

The suspects, who police think are affiliated with the MS-13 gang, threw rocks and bottles and yelled anti-gay slurs at three others late last month along Weisman Road in Wheaton, police said this week. One of the victims, a 30-year-old woman, was struck on the forehead, fracturing her skull and causing bleeding in her brain that required a craniotomy, according to the charging documents.

“This was a brutal hate crime,” Officer Melanie Brenner, a Montgomery police spokeswoman, said Tuesday.

For the second time in a week, a Georgetown University student has reported being attacked and called an anti-gay slur while walking near campus, prompting yet another student gathering Monday evening to show support for the victims.

“A lot of people are really hurt and are trying to figure out what the next step is,” said Robert Byrne, a Georgetown junior who organized Monday’s Vigil Against Assault. “We want to use this time as a healing moment and to express solidarity with the victims.”

About 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a male student was walking near 36th and N streets NW when a man with his face painted red and white repeatedly harassed him verbally, according to police. The man then assaulted the student before fleeing, according to the Georgetown Department of Public Safety.

The student was treated at Georgetown University Hospital and released, university spokesman Andy Pino said.

On Friday, about 50 Georgetown students rallied on campus to show solidarity for another victim of an anti-gay assault. A female student was walking on Canal Road near the entrance to Georgetown’s campus about 9 p.m. last Tuesday when she was confronted by two white men in their late 20s. The men shouted anti-gay insults at the student, who was wearing a gay rights T-shirt, according to campus police.

The assailants grabbed her book bag, pushed her to the ground and hit her with the bag.
