Broward commissioners on Tuesday chose the county’s first openly gay mayor to replace Mayor Stacy Ritter, who is stepping down after a turbulent year at the top.

Commissioners made history when they unanimously elected Ken Keechl as the county’s new mayor. The selection of a new mayor was part of Broward’s annual changing of the guard in county leadership.

“We’re a conservative Republican organization that represents the gay and lesbian caucus, or the GLBT caucus of the Republican party,” says James Humphreys, vice president of Log Cabin Republicans. Not every Log Cabin Republican is gay or lesbian. About a third are not. And this is not their first time with Utah Governor Gary Herbert. Last month the group discussed their legislative goals in a closed door session. The governor declined an interview with FOX 13. But in August he said he would be concerned about creating a “protected class.”

Indian election authorities Thursday granted what they called an independent identity to intersex and transsexuals in the country’s voter lists.

Before, members of these groups — loosely called eunuchs in Indian English — were referred to as male or female in the voter rolls.

But now, they will have the choice to tick “O” — for others — when indicating their gender in voter forms, the Indian election commission said in a statement.

U.S. Senate hopeful Jacob Meister is not your run-of-the-mill political candidate. And he is quick to point out his sexual orientation is only one part of how he is different from his opponents.

The Illinois U.S. Senate seat, which President Obama vacated after his election last November, remains mired in controversy. Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed U.S. Sen. Roland Burris late last year shortly after federal authorities indicted him on corruption charges. And as of last week’s official petition filing deadline, Meister finds himself among three other prominent candidates for the seat’s Democratic nomination. These include former Chicago Inspector David Hoffman, on-leave Chicago Urban League president Cheryle Jackson and state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, who currently maintains a fundraising advantage against his opponents.
